A primary care physician is one of the most integral members of your health team. Often called general practitioners (GP) they are the physician we seek out when we are suffering from aches, pains and colds or need a regular check-up or physical. What many don’t know is they treat a wide range of health conditions and diseases including long-term, chronic health problems like high-blood pressure and obesity.
Regular visits to your primary care physician are key in the early detection and even prevention of many chronic illnesses. In fact, primary care physicians provide much of the health care patients need including initiating an evaluation and managing complex medical conditions and determining when a patient might need to see a specialist. Should you need to see a specialist, you can count on your primary care physician to make sure additional care is coordinated with other physicians and a larger health system.
